March 20 – Final Battle of the Books

March 23-27 White Ribbon Week

We are fortunate to be part of the Orem Elementary family. In the past, students from our school have presented opportunities for our school to help others in and out of our community. We have collected school supplies for students in Africa, non-perishable food to help our local families, candy for our troops abroad as well as countless other smaller but just as meaningful acts of service and kindness for others.

For the next 2 weeks we will be supporting a 1st grade student at Orem Elementary. Emrys Nietes is a 1st grader at Orem Elementary who loves to serve other people and make them happy. He has been growing his hair for two years so that he could donate his hair to a child suffering from hair loss due to an illness.

Emrys will be visiting the Philippines for the first time this summer. He will be celebrating his 7th birthday there, and he has decided to start a program called “The Happy Feet Project”. Emrys’s goal is to collect shoes to donate to less fortunate children in the Philippines. He will be visiting elementary schools in some of the impoverished areas in his parents’ hometown.

Please support Emrys on his mission to provide happy feet to those destitute kids in the Philippines. His birthday wish is to put smiles on the faces of many children. He is accepting elementary student size shoes from 4 to 12 years old.

We will be collecting student size shoes until March 19th. If you wish to donate, please donate gently used or new shoes.

Next week is a short week. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead 1 hour for Daylight Savings Time. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Have a great rest of the week!!!

Good Afternoon OES Families,

This week is our Hope Week. We kicked off this morning with a fantastic assembly with Alex Boye. He spoke of finding the good in everyday life and never giving up. He shared some videos of his songs, sang with the students and was a great inspiration for us all.

This week we will have different challenges each day for students and each day an activity:

Tuesday: Hope Squad kids play with other students at recess and write messages of hope with sidewalk chalk around the playground.

Wednesday: Extra Lemon Drop Wednesday with the principal and Hope Squad kids will visit each class.

Thursday: Mountain View’s Hope Squad will be here during lunch and lunch recess to talk to and play with the kids in our school.

Friday: During lunch, Hope Squad kids will be outside the lunchroom for all students in the school to write about how they can brighten others’ (or their own) days on paper lemon drops. We will hang these outside the lunchroom.

Valentine’s Day is Friday. Classrooms will celebrate individually, please ask your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Don’t forget that next Monday, February 17, 2020 is President’s Day and there will be no school.

The district sent out information regarding the snow make up day stating that the make up day will be on April 6, 2020. It is an early out Monday, but also the day before Spring Break begins. We realize that many families may have already made plans for this day. If your child is planning to be absent that day, please let the office know as soon as possible.
