Safe Schools Policy
It is Alpine School District’s intent to maintain a safe and positive atmosphere by prohibiting acts of violence, aggressive behavior, bullying, intimidation, possession of weapons, criminal behavior or gang activity on school property.
Closed Campus
For the safety and welfare of students, we maintain a closed campus. Students may not leave the school grounds during school hours without a parent or guardian. If a student needs to leave school, a parent or guardian must come inside and check the child out from the office. Any other arrangements must be first approved in the office.
Accidents and Illness
If accidents or illness occur, the school will contact the parents or the designated person on the health information sheet. Please keep the Emergency and Health Information Sheet up to date.
Safety Drills
Orem Elementary School follows the Emergency Response Protocol as developed by professionals and adopted by Alpine School District. Throughout the year, the following type of drills, with their accompanying procedures, are conducted regularly to ensure the utmost preparation and safety in case of a true emergency. Parents are encouraged to talk with the administration with any questions or concerns.
Fire (fire alarm will sound)
Students evacuate the building through the assigned door. Teachers close the classroom door as they leave. Teachers take the emergency bag with them to the outside assembly area as indicated on the school map. Students stay in a single file line as the teacher calls roll. Teachers use red or green card in the folder to signal the supervisor. Green= all students accounted for. Red= student(s) unaccounted for. Teachers report any missing students to the supervisor. Students stay in line until all clear is given by the supervisor to reenter the building.
Earthquake
Tell students to drop and cover. Students go under desks or tables and hold onto legs of furniture. After the shaking stops, the “evacuate” signal will be given over the intercom or by the teacher and all students and teachers evacuate the building using the same procedures used for a fire.
Lockout – Now Called Secure
The need for this type of response includes a perceived threat outside of the school building. The signal for a lockout will be given over the intercom system. (“Lockout!—secure the perimeter”) Teachers quickly check the hall for students or school personnel to bring into the room. Teachers close and lock all doors and close window blinds. Teachers have students stay away from the windows and doors. Teachers call the office to give an accounting of who is in the room. They report any students who are missing and/or any students or adults that were brought in from the hall. Teachers do not allow anyone to leave the classroom. Teachers quietly conduct class until the all clear is given.
Lockdown
The need for this type of response includes a perceived threat inside the school building. The signal for an intruder alert will be given over the intercom system. (“Lockdown—locks, lights, out of sight.”) Teachers follow the same procedures for a lockout in addition to having all those in the classroom get down in the least visible location in the classroom so that they cannot be seen by anyone looking in the windows. Teachers do not use the telephone but instead text the office with an accounting of who is in the classroom. There should be no other talking or movement. Teachers do not open the door until the all clear is given.
Evacuation and Reunification
In the need to evacuate the building on a long-term basis, the school has two designated evacuation areas. The first is the large grassy field north of the school building and the second is the LDS church building located at 114 S 400 West Orem, UT. The church will be used if there is a need to evacuate a further distance from the school than the grassy field provides.
In case of the need to evacuate and have parents pick up their students early, the following procedures will take place:
- Teachers and school personnel will evacuate all students to predetermined evacuation areas and make accounting for all students.
- A phone and email message will be sent to all Orem Elementary parents advising them of the situation and asking them to come immediately and retrieve their student(s).
- As parents come to the field they will line up either along the sidewalk on the north side of the main parking lot or at the East door of the church.
- Parents will be directed by school personnel to the location of their child’s grade level.
- Teachers will check students out to parents or other adults as designated by the parent on the emergency check-out form. Only those adults designated on this form will be allowed to check out a student. Parents, or those picking up the student, should be prepared to present a picture ID.
- When an adult does check-out a student, he or she will sign the check-out sheet provided by the teacher.
- Parents and students will exit through the West side of the field or the West church exit.
- Teachers and school personnel will stay at the evacuation site until all students are retrieved.
We encourage all parents to make sure the school has updated health information and emergency contacts for each student. It is imperative that anyone a parent anticipates needing to check-out their child in an emergency situation is listed in Skyward. Please contact the school with any questions.
